Accounting for Sole Traders

A sole trader accountant helps individuals who are sole traders, often known as self-employed. This is someone who works for themselves; including, but no limited to, online stores , builders, or even bookkeepers . Registering as self-employed is often the easier route for newer businesses as it requires less financial obligation, though does mean you are subject to personal risk. You can choose to operate under your own name if you wish, or do still have the option to register under a business name.

    Let’s Get To Know Eachother

Do Sole Traders Need An Accountant?

While there is no legal requirement for sole traders to use an accountant, it can be extremely beneficial. A sole trader can complete any required financial obligations on their own if they wish, but having a sole trader accountant means that all documentation will be filed as efficiently as possible, reducing your tax liability and providing financial planning.

The smaller your business the easier financial duties may be, but as your business grows, someone needs to help guide you through and make sure you're on the right track. Most sole traders don't have much, if any accounting experience, which can make keeping on top of your finances a little difficult. You'll also need to keep up with changing regulations and allowances regularly to maximize your business's performance. A sole trader accountant is often on top of this information and can bring great benefits to your business.

What Does a Sole Trader Accountant Do?

If you are a new business that's full of ideas but hasn't registered yet, the first thing you'll need to do is set yourself up as a sole trader. This is a process our sole trader accountant team can help you through. As we mentioned above, it is important to remember that when you register as self-employed you're also accepting personal liability. This means, that as your business is not a separate entity to yourself, you are liable for any debts or legal action taken against the work you're carrying out.

As with setting up as a limited company, registering as self-employed also comes with its advantages and disadvantages, which is why it's crucial to sit down with a professional and discuss your options, to ensure you are making the right decision for the future growth and success of your business. If required, we will also register your business name with necessary legal bodies.

Every year a sole trader is required to submit a tax return to 5th April of the previous year. This needs to be filed by 31st January. Once you provide us with the relevant records, such as receipts, invoices and bank statements, we can complete your return and ensure it is filed to the highest of standards. Depending on the size and operation of your business, you may need to register for additional services such as VAT or CIS. This will also be determined in your initial consultation.

    Choosing the right path

As we mentioned above, choosing the right legal entity for your business is not an easy decision by any means. While it can be beneficial for one business, it can be the complete opposite for another. We love to sit down with all of our clients in their initial free consultation to get to know how it operates. You'll sit down with one our sole trader experts for a free 30 minute chat to get to know you and your business. The more we know and understand about your business the more informed decisions we can make, providing you with the most tax-efficient route setting up, planning and strategizing.

Can I Do My Own Tax Return?

Of course! It's likely that you'll have to pay for some software to keep all of your documents and make the correct calculations. You will also need to make sure you keep a physical copy of your records even if you've entered them into digital software. Even though you can complete your own Tax Return if you have the necessary accounting and technical skills, you will need to make a judgement call on the efficiency of your self-assessment. Most people who have great business ideas, tend to not also be experts in the accounting industry, meaning you may not be up to date with all the rules and regulations that are often changing on a annual basis. If this is the case, you may be missing out on allowances and other relief's you can claim. In many circumstances, a good sole trader accountant will pay for themselves from the expert services and advice they bring to the table.
