If you are running a business, it is important to know about value-added tax (VAT) and how it affects your bottom line. VAT is a tax levied on the sale of goods and services in the European Union (EU). As a business owner, you are responsible for paying VAT to the government. However, you can also claim back any VAT that you have paid on business expenses. This is where VAT specialist accountants can help. They can ensure that you are paying the correct amount of VAT and help you to claim back any VAT that you are entitled to.

Benefits of a VAT Accountant

A VAT accountant can help relieve the burden and stress of completing a VAT return to maximise your profitability and cash flow. We provide a clear and jargon-free approach that will identify opportunities and advise on the correct and beneficial actions to augment the day to day running of your business. Our tailored approach will mean your business will be provided with a dedicated VAT accountant to look after your finances. This member of our team will work closely with you to understand how your operation runs and what we can do to improve your cashflow.

With years of experience and training in the VAT sector, our team are capable of spotting mistakes and making any necessary adjustments before your returns are submitted. It is important to develop good report with HMRC and build on your relationship. Unfortunately, even the slightest error on your return could be flagged as fraud, so it’s incredibly important to know your legal obligations and the regulations surrounding them like the back of your hand. We will also be able to identify any tax-saving opportunities within your business and help reduce your tax liability as much as possible whilst still remaining compliant.

    Let’s Get To Know Eachother

What's Included In Our VAT Return Services

As a VAT accountant, we offer a variety of cost-effective accounting services to our clients, such as VAT registration, HMRC investigation resolution and tax planning. We will also perform VAT health checks each time we prepare your return and monitor for any VAT issues.

    VAT Registration

We can help register your business for VAT and any other VAT related compliance. Having carried out the registration procedure for numerous amounts of clients we can complete the process in a quick and efficient manner. If you are required to register for VAT, or we believe that voluntary registration would be beneficial to your business, we will discuss your options and let you know how the process will work, and what you will be required to do in your day to day running to stay compliant.

    VAT Compliance

As you may already know, the VAT system is extremely complicated and can present a range of challenges along the way. If you’re not qualified in the world of accounting, it is often a daunting experience than can lead to paying a higher figure than you expected on your VAT return. Having a VAT accountant on your side will make sure that any regulatory compliance, such as Making Tax Digital or VAT registration, is met with extreme accuracy.

    VAT Planning

Becoming a client is more than just letting us have your books to file. We take pride in helping our clients grow their business and constantly monitor your transactions and let you know if we think there’s a better route available. It’s important to us that your VAT returns are filed correctly and completed with the utmost accuracy. We will also ensure your books are in order, to deal with any disputes or audits from the revenue.

    Periodic VAT Returns

All VAT-registered businesses are required to complete a VAT return on a periodic basis. This is generally carried out on a quarterly basis. This will show how much VAT needs to be paid over to HMRC, or, if relevant, how much will be refunded. A VAT accountant will make sure this is completed on time every period.

    HMRC Resolution

Not always by fault of their own, businesses are targeted by HMRC and pulled into a dispute. Sometimes this may be an error on their part, other times it may be justified. Having produced VAT returns for over 35 years JMC is accustomed to such challenges. We can help your business demonstrate and produce any information that HMRC require to resolve the issue. Our extensive experience and VAT knowledge means we know exactly how to comply with HMRC’s requests. We will ensure the matter is concluded as quickly as possible and all requests are met clearly.

    VAT Advice

Not every business understands the procedure of VAT, which is why we will always make sure you are clear on what you need to do. As VAT consultants, we will provide quality advice to ensure your business stays healthy. A regular review will be carried out whilst we are working on your VAT, which enables us to analyse your transactions and provide advice on any changes you need to make or that may be beneficial to your business. We will also ensure the correct rules are being applied and any opportunities are presented to you.

VAT, or Value-Added Tax, is a consumption tax levied on certain goods and services in the European Union. The tax is applied at each stage of production and distribution, and ultimately passed on to the consumer. Businesses registered for VAT must charge the tax on their sales, and then account for it in their returns. This can be a complex and time-consuming process, which is why many businesses choose to outsource their VAT obligations to a specialist accountant.

A value-added tax (VAT) is a consumption tax placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain, from production to the point of sale. The amount of VAT that the consumer pays is based on the value of the good or service, less any VAT paid on the good or service at previous stages in the supply chain. A VAT specialist accountant can help businesses to correctly calculate and file their VAT returns, as well as advise on VAT planning and compliance.

A VAT specialist accountant is a highly trained and experienced professional who specializes in all aspects of value-added tax (VAT). They work with businesses of all sizes to ensure compliance with VAT laws and regulations, and advise on the most efficient and effective way to manage VAT. They also work closely with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to ensure that businesses are paying the correct amount of VAT.

There are three different rates of VAT that are applied in every country that has adopted the VAT. They are:
    1. VAT zero-rate
    2. VAT standard rate
    3. Reduced VAT rate
Each of these rates apply to different types of businesses and supplies, and it is essential that you know which one applies to yours before preparing your returns.

    Different Rates of VAT

There are 3 VAT schemes that are applicable to VAT-registered businesses and are used against different types of supplies in various industries. It is important that you know which VAT rate applies to which items you are making a claim for as an error on your return could be flagged as fraud by HMRC.

    Standard Rate

The Standard Rate of VAT is the most common rate of VAT and is applied to the majority of goods and services. The current Standard Rate of VAT is 20%. This rate is applied to most goods and services, with a few exceptions such as food, children’s clothing and books, which are subject to a reduced rate of VAT.

    Zero Rate

Zero Rate VAT is a value added tax that is levied at a rate of 0%. This means that no tax is charged on the sale of goods or services that are subject to this tax. Zero Rate VAT is typically applied to items that are considered to be essential, such as food and medicine. This can be beneficial for businesses as it can help to reduce the cost of goods and services.

    Reduced Rate

The reduced rate is a reduced rate of VAT that can be charged on certain goods and services. The reduced rate is 5% rather than the standard rate of 20%. The reduced rate can be applied to a number of different items, including energy-saving materials, children's car seats, and sanitary products. In order to qualify for the reduced rate, the item must meet certain criteria. For example, the item must be designed to save energy or be used for a charitable purpose.
